Ms. Crawford's TOP 5 Things You Can Do At Home

As we are working our way through many skills this year there will always be ways that you can help your child at home. Once a student makes a connection or identifies and personalizes a skill or idea that is when it really "sinks in" and they can retain it. You can help me with this!

Here are my TOP 5 home projects that you can always work on at home.

1. Memory Games (This will help them with retention.)
Example: http://www.education.com/worksheets/first-grade/memory-games/
(This website has a lot of memory games you can print, cut, and use at home.)

2. Turn the closed caption ON the TV (This automatically engages their brains and forces them to try to read more, even if they do not realize it!)

3. Colors, Colors, Colors (The more you allow them to write with colored markers or pencils the more it stimulates their brains and they love it!)
Example: Rainbow Write spelling and vocabulary words 3x each.

4. Learn the strategies they know and practice at home to help reinforce. (I will be posting a list of strategies we use in class so you can say them at home as well.)
Example: Gus the Plus and Linus the Minus (Math)
"When two vowels go walking the first one does the talking." (Phonics with song link below)

5. Take advantage of school sponsored sites. (A list of sites with a username and password will be provided the second week of school.)
Example: IXL, this is a wonderful math site that directly links the skills we are learning in class to your home computer. I will be providing you with exactly what skills to practice every week in my newsletter.

Any questions or concerns please let me know.
